The prototypes with blue backgrounds were created by LEGO. The original plan was to release them onto the market in July 1999 as a teaser series. Four of the smaller models were even given official LEGO set numbers. The physical models were given to DDI to use for the video game cutscenes.Source: DDI Dump email from 29 Oct 1998.

Some of the prototypes ended up in the possession of DDI staff, including 1155 and 1158. Source: Baraklava

The three ‘Mini Heroes Collection’ sets were released a year after the retail sets, and were primarily available through online purchases from LEGO.com. Their prices have skyrocketed in recent years, especially the Chief minifigure who is exclusive to 3347.

Very little is known about this exclusive, other than that it contains a working flashlight and was released in Japan and at least one English speaking country.

Promotional Sets

These sets were released exclusively in Japan through a promotion with Kabaya. They came packed together inside in a 4-pack cardboard box. Within each cardboard box was a Kabaya sweet and a polybag with the Rock Raiders set.

Front and back of the Kabaya promotional 4-pack

These are fairly difficult to find. They pop up a handful of times a year on BrickLink or eBay but are quickly purchased.

The DDI Dump is a gold mine of info about LEGO Rock Raiders. The files were recovered from hard drives of the company who originally created the video game. Contents include prototype images, design documents, and emails between the developers.

In addition to the forum, the RRU Knowledge Base is a wiki that contains quite a bit of information about Rock Raiders and other LEGO video games.

What is Rock Raiders

LEGO Rock Raiders was a short-lived theme produced from 1999-2000. The premise is a group of LEGO space miners who collect energy crystals for power on an alien planet. Along the way they encounter rock monsters who also want the crystals. The LEGO sets had a heavy duty feel, with a wide variety of digging and hauling vehicles.

LEGO released a variety of media to tie into the game, including books, and video games for PC and PlayStation. The PC video game captured the imaginations of many young fans, including me. Although many of the vehicles and buildings featured in the video game could be purchased directly as sets, some of them were custom built and never released as sets. In addition to these models, there were also a number of unique merchandise like t-shirts and keychains produced.

Purpose of this site

In 2021 I started to collect all the physical LEGO Rock Raiders sets and merchandise. As of fall 2023 I have finished collecting all the physical sets, but am still on the lookout for a number of unique items.

This website is the resource I wish I had two years ago, when I first started my collection. I wanted a single place where I could start looking for all the available Rock Raiders collectibles.

Buildings

The LEGO Rock Raiders PC Video game featured a variety of different buildings that could be constructed to assist with mining operations. While some of the buildings are virtually identical to what we saw released in physical LEGO sets, many of the buildings were created solely for the game.

In the section below we’ll go through the buildings one-by-one and compare the in-game versions to the variants that appeared in the instruction manual that came with the video game.

Teleport Pad (4990 The Rock Raiders HQ)

In-Game Version

Almost identical to a portion of the base in
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ

The Trans-Neon Orange
Plate, Round 1 x 1
are missing from the in-game model. This was likely done to simplify the model and reduce poly count.

The
Bar 1 x 4 x 2 with Studs
pieces in the set are Light Grey but appear Dark Turqoise in the game version. This could be a mistake by DDI since the piece has never been produced in that color. In an early screenshot named
Jan191999
the bar pieces were seen in Light Gray.

Manual Version

This appears to have been reused for the central portion of the in-game version of the Tool Store.

Has
Yellow Tile 1 x 4 with Black and Yellow Danger Stripes
pieces with a
Yellow Plate 1 x 2
on the roof.

Has headlights on the sides.

Prototype

An early render from DDI displayed an alternate version of the docks.

This version is L-shaped and presumably would need to be built on a corner where land intersects water.

Does not contain a
Vehicle, Tipper Bed Small
like the later versions do for unloading cargo.

Power Station (From 4990 The Rock Raiders HQ)

In-Game Version

The top portion of the Power Station is identical to a portion of the base in
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ
.

Construction fence
Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Headlight
pieces are Red and Blue

The 3-tall slope pieces are lined up in a row.

The Black Ribbed Hose connects into the side of the main power station tower in a way that is physically impossible with the
Yellow Tile 1 x 4 with Black and Yellow Danger Stripes
tile. One workaround is to elevate the tower by moving the rest of the pieces 1 plate higher

Manual Version

Construction fence
Brick, Modified 1 x 1 with Headlight
pieces are Dark Gray

The 3-tall slope pieces in the front are inset

The Black Ribbed Hose connects into the
Dark Gray Slope 45 2 x 2 with Black and Yellow Danger Stripes Pattern
in a physically impossible way

Prototype

The filename of an early render from DDI revealed that the tower was originally meant to be the Ore Refinery.

This version only had the tower portion of the model.

This early version was seen in an early screenshot named ‘Jan191999’

Support Station

Support Station in-game, and manual render

In-game and manual versions appear almost identical

One difference is that the manual render has two Yellow
Plate 2 x 4
on top of the foundation

Prototype

Extracting files from the LRR PC game revealed that the Support Station is named Barracks internally

The first render is missing a portion of the roof including the
3 Cross with Dome
with caution stripes.

Upgrade Station (4990 The Rock Raiders HQ)

In-Game Version

Almost identical to a portion of the base in
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ

The in-game version has a brown chain like the physical set

The gap underneath the crane cab is filled in, presumably to reduce poly count.

It’s unclear why the 8x8 part underneath the crane is seen in Dark Turqoise here, and whether the Dark Grey portion is intended to be the height of a single plate.

It’s likely that DDI was taking creative liberties with this approach, potentially to create a sharper visual contrast between the foundation and the Upgrade Station.

Manual Version

The manual version has a dark gray chain

The
Crane Arm Outside
appears Black in the render instead of Dark Gray like in the physical set and the in-game version

Notably, it has a magnet at the attachment end of the chain

It also has a set of Trans-Neon Green
Plate, Round 1 x 1
pieces arranged in a circle on the ground

Prototype

Two prototype renders of the Upgrade Station exist

The first has a Red
Crane Arm Outside
with no magnet attachment and a brown chain

The second has a Black
Crane Arm Outside
with a dark gray chain

Both of these versions sit on the edge of a large rectangular piece

In-Game Version

The Radar dish is a copy of the one seen in
4970 The Chrome Crusher

Lacks the
Antenna Small Base
pieces, presumably to reduce poly count.

The internals of the cockpit are obscured by a black texture.

Manual Render

The
Slope 45 2 x 2 with Rock Raiders Pattern
appears Dark Gray here, but it was only ever produced in Dark Turqoise

Prototype

An early render of the Geological Center shows a 3D wireframe indicating that it was meant to have two cockpits back-to-back

It also had a Light Gray roll cage, seen in many of the physical prototypes that LEGO produced for Rock Raiders

Ore Refinery

Ore Refinery, in-game and manual render

In-Game Version

Missing the Neon-Trans Green Antenna piece

Presumably this was done by DDI to reduce the poly count.

Manual Version

At first glance the Yellow plate underneath the Technic liftarm appears to be 2 x 10, but that’s an optical illusion.

In the prototype render below, we can see that the plate is 2 x 8 and there’s a separate Yellow plate on the base piece.

Prototype

An early render named ‘CrystalRefinery’ indicates that this was originally intended to be used for crystals instead of ore.

Mining Laser

Mining Laser from 4990 The Rock Raiders HQ

In-Game Version

The Mining Laser is a shortened version of the one seen in
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ

The in-game one has a version of Sparks with no helmet

It does not contain the antenna or 1x1 round plate, probably to reduce the poly count.

The Yellow ladders are also simplified to reduce the poly count.

Manual Version

Does not have a minifigure on it

Has the antenna and 1x1 round plate

Prototype

There are 3 separate prototype renders of the mining tower.

MiningTower is identical to the manual render, from a different angle.

Tower is an exact copy of the Mining Laser from
4990 The Rock Raiders HQ

The name of AdvMiningTower implies that there was a plan to have the taller version of the Mining Laser as an in-game upgrade, but it was scrapped during development.

In-Game Version

The center of the the Super Teleport is identical to the in-game Teleport Pad

Just like in the Teleport Pad model, the
Bar 1 x 4 x 2 with Studs
pieces appear Dark Turqoise but were never produced in that color.

Manual Version

Does not include an 8x8 Dark Gray part below the central Teleport Pad

A prototype version of Super Teleport was named
TeleportCentre

The outer pillars from the back corners ended up in the final version

The Black 4x4 Tile with Arrow appears to be a nonexistent part.

In the Rock Raiders Design document, we see a primitive early version of the Electric Fence.

The alpha channels on the image appear to have been lost, giving it a black background.

The Canteen was never included in the actual game, but the mesh and texture were discovered recently and Baraklava re-created it.

Most of the Rock Raiders have fairly similar designs between the in-game and physical versions, with a notable exception.
Although the DDI Dump and marketing materials and prototypes show the crew with leg prints, none of the released figures contain them.

Rock Raider is the standard miner featured in the Rock Raiders PC video game. It does not have a physical counterpart. Although the torso looks similar to Sparks’ torso at first glance, it’s actually an entirely different graphic. The head is a generic Yellow
Minifigure, Head Standard Grin Pattern
.

The original plan for Chief was for him to be released as a bonus figure with the Rock Raiders video game. This plan was scrapped and the minifigure was instead released as set 3347, part of the Mini Heroes Collection.

The designer of the figure (Simeon Hankins) created a thread on Rock Raiders United where he explained the development of the figure and shared images of his one-of-a-kind prototype.

As far as we know, LEGO never created a full-size physical version of the LMS Explorer. They did physically assemble partial sections of the ship, including the bridge. Photos of these sections were sent to Data Design Interactive (DDI) to use for creating 3D models.

Arthuriel from Rock Raiders United has done an incredible job creating the most accurate recreation of the LMS Explorer as a 3D model. Building a minifig-scale version of the ship would not be feasible, given that the ship would be roughly 25 feet long and require more than 58,000 pieces to complete.

Bridge

The bridge section of the ship is a truncated pyramid that sits on top of the main ship and is featured prominently in the cutscenes, so it was possible to build a fairly accurate version.

Fans recently discovered pictures from LEGO’s version that helped fill in the gaps.

Physical Version

<s>It contains one piece that was never produced in that color:

- A Dark Turqoise Minifigure, Utensil Seat (Chair) 2 x 2</s>

UPDATE - As of May 1, 2024, it appears we are getting this seat as part of 60423: Downtown Streetcar and Station. Credit to Juniper for spotting this!

It also contains several prototype pieces:

A Dark Grey
Brick, Modified Octagonal 2 x 2 x 1

This is essentially a shorter version of
Brick, Modified Octagonal 2 x 2 x 3 1/3

Cutscene Version

The bridge seen in the cutscenes has a few key differences from the physical version.

The corner pipe pieces are rendered in Chrome Gold instead of Chrome Silver

All the
Tile, Modified 1 x 2 Grille
pieces in the ceiling section are aligned

Hangar Bay

Only seen in the extended intro cutscene

Appears to be connected to the bridge via the elevator

Docs and Jet enter this room to grab tools and vehicles before heading to the Teleport Bay

Connected to the Teleport Bay via a large hangar door

Contains a Granite Grinder, Small Transport Truck, and pair of Tunnel Scouts

Teleport Bay

Seen in both the intro and the extended intro

Contains machinery to teleport crew members and vehicles down to Planet U.

Also contains a viewscreen that allows communication with the bridge

Reactor

The Reactor uses energy crystals to power the LMS Explorer

It appears for a brief moment in the intro cutscene. After the ship is struck by an asteroid, you can see the reactor powering down in a viewscreen.

It also appears in the outro, when Sparks and Jet feed it with newly acquired energy crystals

The Reactor also has an elevator, but it appears to be a large cargo elevator. This is different than the one that connects the bridge and the hangar bay.

Trivia: The machine that Sparks feeds the energy crystals appears to be almost identical to a model of the Canteen building that was scrapped before the game was released.
